Top Ten Most Powerful Superheroes

This is it. The debate that's been perpetuating for decades in dingy comic book stores and grandmother's basements across the country: "My favorite superhero can kick your favorite’s ass!" And there's never been a definitive answer. Until now.

Your pals at Old-Wizard decided to settle this age-old debate once and for all. We've gathered up all the superheroes in the DC and Marvel universes, pitted them against one -another and determined who the ten most powerful superheroes of all time are.  In doing so we allowed only "normal" superheroes. No exorbitantly overpowing cosmic beings of a superlative "universal" order (like the Phoenix, Odin, or the Highfather) allowed. We also didn't include some of the "normal" superheroes either, due to the similarity of their powers compared to the heroes on our list, instead we chose the first and most well known hero’s.  This article was treated as a no-holds-barred, do-or-die contest. Each character was giving it his all in the battles that we've set before them. Each hero will be using the full magnitude of their powers, and not holding back any punches.

Determining this list wasn't easy, it took several days of arguing, name calling, some shouting, and a little bit of snuggling, but we finally came up with what we think is the definitive list of the most powerful superheroes of all time. With that said, meet the #10 man on the list ...

#10 Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

Despite coming in at number 10, The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is one tough hombre. As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, he wields a power ring that can generate a variety of effects and energy constructs, sustained purely by the ring wearer's strength of will. The greater the user's willpower, the more effective the ring. The limits of the power ring's abilities are never conspicuously defined but it has been referred to as "the most powerful weapon in the universe" on more than one occasion.  It's precious.  Over the years, the ring has been shown capable of accomplishing almost anything within the imagination of the ring bearer. Often the rings are used to form solid-light constructs, the power and size of which are limited only by the ring-bearer's willpower. And, if that wasn't powerful enough, DC recently (in 2006) retconned the ring's longtime lack of effect on yellow objects, stating that the ring-bearer need only feel fear and overcome it in order to affect yellow objects. With his protective bubbles and deleterious green energy bursts, the Green Lantern has fought with, and at varying times against, such heavyweights as Superman and Captain Marvel.  But he's still no match for number 9 on our list…

#9 Professor Charles Xavier

So how does someone whose Kryptonite is stairs make it onto the list of the ten most powerful superheroes of all time? Well, despite being wheelchair-bound, Professor Charles Xavier is one of the most powerful heroes in comic-dom. Born a mutant, Professor X is the world's most powerful telepath.  He is able to read or project his thoughts into minds within a radius of hundreds of miles. He can psionically manipulate the minds of others, warp perceptions to make himself seem invisible or project illusions, cause loss of particular memories, and induce pain or temporary mental and/or physical paralysis. Within close range, he can manipulate almost any number of minds for such simple feats. However, he can only take full possession of one mind at a time, and must strictly be within that being's physical presence. He can cause total amnesia.  He can even project powerful mental bolts of psionic energy, enabling him to stun the mind of another being into unconsciousness, and completely shut down minds and bodies, or cause death.  But, while Professor X may possess the most powerful melon on Earth, his delicate body would prove to be too much a liability against the other powerhouses on this list.

#8 The Martian Manhunter

The Martian Manhunter’s chief super power is super strength.  Super strength and durability.  His two powers are super strength, durability and flight.   His three powers are super strength, durability, flight and shapeshifting.   Amongst his many powers are super strength, durability, flight and shapeshifting… I’ll come in again.  The Martian Manhunter is basically the Swiss army knife of Superheroes. Along with all those powers, he has super speed and "Martian" vision, both at levels close to those of Superman himself. He not only can turn invisible but also alter his density to become incredibly strong, tough and ultimately intangible.  In addition to his physical powers, J'onn is also a very powerful telepath. He possesses 9 different senses, though these are ill defined and often forgotten.  And if superhuman physical strength and mental powers aren’t enough, J'onn also has the ability to regenerate. In the past he's regenerated his entire body from only his severed hand, which was a feat that came at great cost and strain.

#7 Black Bolt

Our seventh most powerful superhero of all time is Black Bolt, the king of the offshoot of humanity known as the inhumans.  Through electron gathering and manipulation, Black Bolt can increase any aspect of his physical nature to superhuman levels, including his strength, speed, stamina and durability. He can channel this power into a single devastating punch called "The Master Blow".   He can also harness the electrons for matter transformation; the controlled projection of energy as concussive blasts or quasi-solid particle/electron fiends, broadcasting jamming frequencies, and flight.  But Black Bolt's most salient offensive weapon is his cacophonous voice, as a hypersonic shout that can level an entire city, and his merest whisper has been shown capable of stunning the Hulk.  It's even been suggested that his voice is capable of destroying a planet.

#6 The Sentry

Empowered by an enigmatic professor's secret formula, The Sentry absorbs solar radiation for strength and moves his molecules an instant ahead of the normal timeline.   His superpowers include super strength, speed, stamina, and senses, along with the power to create energy fields and the power of unaided flight.  He also possesses a number of mental powers, having displayed the ability to implant his memories in another person's mind.  To top all that off, he emits a form of radiation that calms down the Hulk, severely limiting his rage-fueled powers.  It's been mentioned a number of times that he possesses the power of "a million exploding suns" and that he is "the most powerful human in the galaxy".  Unfortunately, his primary weakness appears to be his mental instability, as he is often referred to as an agoraphobic schizophrenic,  And he is very susceptible to mental manipulation and inculcation.  Not only that, but he's been taken down by the number 6 hero on our list...

#5 The Hulk

Never mind the fact that in Hulk #470, the Hulk was choked out by an ordinary python, or that he was once injured by Wolverine's bone claws.  We at Old-Wizard write that off as poor puerile writing.  At his best, the Hulk is a 7-foot, one-ton green behemoth with near-unlimited strength, rapid tissue-regenerative powers and nigh-inexhaustible stamina.  He is highly resistant to physical, psychic attacks, and temperature extremes, and he's completely immune to diseases, poisons.  His powerful legs allow him to leap into Earth's upper atmosphere, or even across continents, and when injured he can heal from almost any wound, inherently embodying the most ubiquitous panacea.  He has gone toe-to toe with almost all of Marvel's elite heroes and villains, and has usually come out on top.  All of his powers depend on how mad he is, and at his maddest, his footsteps are enough to shake the entire Eastern Seaboard, and his punches capable of shattering small planets.

#4 Doctor Strange

Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Steven Strange, has unparalleled sagicity of the mystic arts, and stands as humanity's first and last line of defense against all magic-based menaces that threaten our dimension.  In addition to being able to perform such feats as astral projection, telepathy, and hypnotism, he also has a number of combat related powers as well.  He can fire energy bolts with potentially enough power to destroy an entire planet (ala Death Star), create impenetrable protective shields, teleport and perform telekinesis.  Basically, Strange can do anything that his current writer can imagine.  There are no rules.  He can even withstand the power of the infinity gauntlet.  There seems to be no clear limitations on his powers.  He can snuff out the feeble flame of any mortal's soul with the mere twitch of his finger, or stop or even turn back time itself.  Doctor Strange clearly stands amongst Marvel's elite heroes.

#3 Superman

Rocketed from the exploding planet Krypton by his scientist parents, and crash-landing on the planet Earth, Kal-El grew to adulthood on a small Kansas farm, raised by the wholesome Kent family.  Raised as Clark Kent, once puberty set in he learned that the planets yellow sun and weaker gravity gave him powers far beyond those a mere mortal man.  Endowed with brazen strength, speed, and senses, not to mention flight, heat vision, and the ability to blow hurricane force winds and near-invulnerability, he moved to Metropolis and started calling himself Superman, where he fights for truth, justice and the American way!  Superman practically has every super power you can imagine, or want (X-ray vision, wink wink, nudge nudge), which puts him in a league of his own.  In addition to these powers, he has gone up against villains many times more powerful than himself, and always comes out on top.

#2 The Silver Surfer

The Silver Surfer is the on-again, off-again herald of Galactus.  These two are the Ross and Rachel of the cosmos.  And like all heralds of Galactus, the Silver Surfer possesses the power called "cosmic", an energy source capable of almost anything, from re-arranging molecules, to energy blasts, to bringing people back from the dead.  With the Silver Surfer it’s more of a question of what he can't do, than what he can.  He has enormous strength, fungible speed, and is nearly invulnerable (he has withstood the destructive power of stars and even black holes).  He is virtually in-destructible, and only characters near his power level are capable of harming him.  He can navigate through space, dimensional barriers, and hyperspace at will.  He has even been depicted as capable of time travel on several occasions.  Give him a board capable of traveling through space, made of the same cosmically powered silver material as his skin, and mentally linked to him, and he's almost unbeatable.  Almost...

#1 The Mighty Thor

Here he is, the Norse god of Thunder himself.  As an Asgardian, Thor is immortal, possesses tendentious strength, and well nigh-invulnerability.   He is also armed with Mjolnir, the mystical warhammer forged and dovetailed by Dwarven blacksmiths, it is capable of opening passage ways through space and time, blocking all sorts of energy blasts, and bending the elements to its master's will.  This guy is a norse warrior god, trained and skilled in the arts of battle, and he's been doing it for countless ages.  And now that Thor has accepted his heritage as the child of Elder goddess Gaea, he now has mastery over the earth itself, allowing him to manipulate it to his will.  Give this erudite god a mystical warhammer, and power over the earth and the elements, and he's insuperable.
