The Top 10 Reasons the Wii Has Dominated the PS3

After Nintendo’s utter domination of Sega in every single platform generation, a new console war was started between Sony and Nintendo.  Sony thought it would try to take on the Nintendo franchise and learn from the mistakes of Sega. Sony succeeded in large part by beating out Nintendo with the Playstation 1 and 2. But a debate now occurs between what the better system is between the Wii and the PS3 in this most modern generation of platform gaming. Nintendo fan boys or not, the Wii is the clear winner over the PS3 for plenty of different reasons. In this list, we will go through these reasons to make clear why the Wii clearly dominates the PS3.

In case anyone didn’t know, the Wii has outsold the PS3 and the Xbox360 combined. When the Wii came out, you literally couldn’t get your hands on it. You go to a to a Best Buy or a Circuit City and play it because of how sought after this system was. Right now the exact  numbers are the Wii at 37 million sold and the PS3 at 17 million. This is clear domination. Surely there must be something that is more desirable about the Wii than the PS3 with this much of a sales difference, and in this list we will go through the top 10 reasons for the Wii’s domination.

10. The Wii comes packaged with games

When you buy a Wii, you don’t just get a system. You get games like Wii tennis, and Wii baseball. While the graphics for Wii tennis and baseball may look simple, it takes nothing away from how fun these games are to play at no extra cost. The PS3 though, doesn’t come with any games. Nintendo went out of their way to make games to be played immediately upon purchase of the system. This reason is a no-brainer for Wii’s domination of the PS3.

9. The Wii fit

For all you guys and girls out there with a significant other who has “put on the pounds” from eating too much and sitting in front of the TV playing too many video games, there’s a solution. It’s the Wii fit, which will make you bend and twist in ways that are only seen in an intense Yoga session. It’s not just stretches and aerobic exercises though, it’s also some incredibly innovative athletic games that will make your significant other into the shape you want them to be! You can go on massive ski jumps and can block soccer balls on difficulty levels of your choosing (depending obviously on how of shape and how much center of gravity you embody). The PS3 has nothing like this. There is nothing that on the PS3 that can make you physically fit like the innovative Wii fit does.

8. The Wii is a family-oriented console

The Nintendo Wii console is the best family-oriented console available today. When you purchase a Wii console, there are lots of options to choose from so that you can choose the package that suits your particular household the best. The basic pack comes with the Wii Remote and Wii Sports, which features five distinct games for you to enjoy. Other packages may include one or more of the many different controllers available for the Wii as well as other games to suit your taste. The Wii takes a rather unique approach to the way in which it is used. With the easy-to-use Wii Menu which resembles TV channels, you can easily navigate with the wireless controller by simply pointing at the screen. The Wii Menu includes the Wii Mii Channel, the Wii Shop where you can purchase additional channels for your Wii console through WiiWare, and much more.

7. Better Fans

How irritating are the fans of the Sony systems? How annoying is it to hear the non-satirical snobbery of Sony Defense Force every time the PS3 system releases a new game? The Nintendo fans know what they’re getting when a new game comes out for any Nintendo system. They know that if a Mario or Zelda is being released for the Wii, it’s going to be a quality game improving on it’s past experiences. The same can’t be said for the PS3, which requires websites like Sony Defense Force to defend average to below-average games at the sake of some fanatical identity on their part. The solid foundation of the Nintendo brand creates a solid fan base that’s able to objectively judge the quality of their games. The same clearly cannot be said of the PS3 fan boys.

6. The Wii is a funny name

The name “Wii” goes a long way for making it better than the boring sounding “Playstation 3″. If you’re one of the lucky ones who have a Wii in their own home, you get to say phrases like “Want to play with my Wii?” to your friends. You can tell your significant other “I’m going to play with my Wii”. Let’s face it, there’s many more great jokes that can be made about the Wii’s name. While this may be a seemingly absurd reason to say that one system is better than another, absurdity adds to the entertainment level of a system that is already immensely entertaining on its own.

5. The PS3 puts too much focus on graphics and not on the games themselves

The Playstation 3′s focus on graphics trumps any substantial gaming experience. Sure, the games look real, but they aren’t much fun…just like real life! The intensity in which the Playstation systems (in particular the PS3) tried to make graphic technology as an identical mirror image of “reality” goes to show a subtle lack of imagination in creation. There really isn’t much difference between the graphics of the Gamecube and the Wii, but that’s not what Nintendo was going for. With the PS3, we get consciously clear face shots and precise walking animation that tries to create a mirror image of reality. This overt focus on reality and not on the games themselves goes a long way for defining the motivations of a platform system.

4. Price

The price difference between the Wii and the PS3 is obvious to most gamers. The Wii is usually at least $200 cheaper than the PS3. What qualifies this massive leap in expense from the Wii to the PS3? It surely can’t be the PS3′s DVD option. I could go out to Target and get a DVD player for $30 dollars instead of paying an extra $200 for the DVD player on the PS3. Maybe it’s all that realistic graphic technology that makes the PS3 enormously expensive. There has not been a gaming system more expensive than the PS3 in the video game platform history. When considering how much more innovation and quality has gone into the gameplay of the Wii, it’s amazing to think that the PS3 is that much more expensive.

3. Better Multiplayer Action

Being able to play the Wii sports catalog with four friends all swinging the Wii’s controller around proves to be enormous fun. As always, Nintendo looks after it’s multiplayer action with the care that has went into all it’s other systems. After all, Nintendo is the creator and owner of the Mario Kart series. The PS3 comes nowhere close to the multiplayer enjoyability of the Wii. One could make the case that the Xbox360 beats out the Wii in multiplayer entertainment, but certainly not the PS3. What game is better than just one of the games in the Wii’s sports collection in the context of multiplayer gaming? We’re interested in anyone’s suggestions.

2. The PS3 is derivative and the Wii is innovative

In terms of innovation, the Wii kills the PS3. From the astoundingly innovative Wii controllers(that embody perfect motion sensory for their tennis and boxing games) to the aesthetic texture of the Wii games themselves, gaming was taken into a fantasy realm it never experienced before in any other system. What is the PS3? It’s basically the same thing as the PS2 except with a new graphics card, while the PS2 was the same thing as the PS1 except with a new graphics card. We see where Sony puts it’s focus in their platform systems. Telling the difference between the PS2 and PS3 is difficult except the obvious (faster and more realistic graphics). Play something as simple as the first Mario installment for the Wii and you will be playing a game you have never played before although using an obviously familiar protagonist.

1. Better Games

Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Wii Bowling? These games will make you break a sweat. Playing these games will bring you into a massive world with interminable gaming quality. The Wii made games open to the masses in a way that had never been done before, even arguably the NES! Can the same be said for the PS3? Grand Theft Auto 4…boring, Warhawk even more dull, Heavenly Sword…all graphics and no creative storyline. The list of games that focus too much on graphic technology (one of our reasons above) and not on the gaming experience itself, goes on an on. Whereas the Wii focuses on things like strong story lines and re-playability. This is hard to find on the PS3. The PS3 keeps releasing new games though, but they keep lacking in the quality embodied in the Wii games.

  1. David says:

This is the list that pisses me off the most on this site:P i own a Wii and PS3, and i have not touched my Wii in over 6 months, you say Ps3 focuses on graphics and not the games? ok then here i will counter your offer, the Wii focuses on innovation and how well you can wiggle your stick rather than games! they have 4 or so games you could call really good deep games, you want a deep story and great characters and such, dont go looking on the Wii.

  2. David says:

p.s. the only 2 reasons the Wii dominates is its Cheap and its innovation, but its innovation is a novelty that is very quickly wearing off

  3. KingDragunov says:

Lol… why did they say “Grand Theft Auto IV…boring”?
    1) That’s not true and
    2) It’s not even a PS3 exclusive.
And I still think Nintendo screwed up with their console name. The initial name was “Nintendo Revolution”, and now they simply call it “Wii.”
Like always, Nintendo has no feelings for good names.

  4. BadCompany says:

You sir are an idiot. My opinions are different than yours on many aspects, but that is okay, since they are opinions. Howver, you made dozens of mistakes on facts, and clearly haven’t done any research at all on the subject.

  5. Fraught says:

    10. Yeah, the PS3 has many, many bundles.

    9. That should’ve gone under “better games”. This game is boring as shit, and there are way better methods to lose weight than with this.

    8. I don’t get it. How is family-oriented a big plus, and all you talk about is the description of the menus.
I seriously don’t understand how the fuck is Sony PS3′s “videos, pictures, music, games etc” more confusing than Wii’s stupid bullshit like fuckin’ TV channels and Wii Mii.

    7. Heh, you say PS3 fanboys are worse than Wii fanboys, whilst only talking about one guy that made a site as a joke.

    6. Yeah, like you said. A very absurd reason.
The term Wii used in sentences only is funny when you’re 12, and doesn’t add anything to the console.
Whenever I play with a console, I never, ever think about the name of the console.

    5. That’s idiotic. There are many PS3 exclusives and multi-platform games that are as fun, or slightly less fun, but still hell of fun, more than the fun games the Wii has, like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and World of Goo? That’s pretty much it.

    4. DVD option? The Xbox 360 is cheaper than the Wii, and THAT motherfucker has the DVD option.
You couldn’t find a blu-ray player for 30$ anywhere. Also, the PS3 has many features that make the price bigger, like a hard-drive, obviously games with better graphics, because it needs better graphics, and unlike in the colourful land of fucknuts that Old-Wizard writes live in, better hardware obviously costs more.

    3. l0lwut?! Saying the Wii has better multiplayer action than the PS3 is like saying chocolate is better than a good steak. It is only good when you don’t eat it too much.
You only talked about one game in multiplayer, and there are games more fun out on the PS3, like many racing games and almost all multiplayer FPSs.

    2. You may be right that the Wii is more innovative, as it actually is, but many people think that many games have a better control scheme on the regular controller, because waggling and shit for moving a character isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, and when you start moving with the regular controller for the Wii, it still isn’t as comfortable as the PS3′s controller.

    1. You listed a game like Wii bowling that gets old fast, and lacks any storyline, and then said that PS3 games are all flashy graphics and no creative storyline.
This point is a major fuck-up. I mean, what games can you list? Mario Galazy, Twilight Princess and…fucking Wii Bowling?
And I actually prefer to slash armies of soldiers into half, and guide arrows in slow-motion, like in Heavenly Sword, rather then swing my hand and watch a ball hit things.
Also, it’s opinion whether you like a storyline set in a city, where you deal with emotional situations, like in the end, choosing which one of them dies, or in a fantasy setting with a black-skinned fat fart trying to take over the world.

Whatever I say, I will probably not get your head out of your ass, but atleast I voiced my opinion, and it would be fun to see your idiotic response.
I know I can’t hope for you guys to give objective opinions on things.

  6. Matt says:

I’m a Nintendo fanboy, but even I will admit that some of your “facts” were really your opinions. You can’t say that a game is good or bad and claim it as a fact.

That aside, my opinion on why the PS3 is not doing well in sales has nothing to do with the Wii. The Xbox360 is outselling it too. I think we can all agree that for the most part, the PS3 and Xbox360 are interchangeable. Yes, each console has their own set of exclusive games. But for the most part, every game that comes out on the PS3 also comes out on the Xbox360. The Xbox360 is much cheaper, pretty much has the same graphics, and in my opinion has a better online system. So why would anyone choose a PS3 over an Xbox360 unless they either really wanted the console exclusive games for the PS3 (Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc.) or they really wanted the included Blu-Ray player.

That’s just my take on it. Remember I am a Nintendo fanboy and do not own a PS3 or Xbox360.

  7. Matt says:

I have to leave another comment after reading some more of other people’s comments. A lot of people are disagreeing with this article saying that the Wii has no good games, or that they are not as good as PS3 games. Who are you people to say whether a game is good or not. To you a game might suck but to others it may be awesome.

This is a list of the top 5 selling video games of 2008:

1.Wii Play (Wii, Nintendo) 5.28 million
2.Mario Kart Wii (Wii, Nintendo) 5 million
3.Wii Fit (Wii, Nintendo) 4.53 million
4.Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii, Nintendo) 4.17 million
    5.Grand Theft Auto 4(360, Take-Two) 3.29 million

    taken from videoonlinegames.suite101.com

Whether in general you like Wii games or you don’t that is your opinion. If you don’t that’s fine, but the majority disagrees with you.

  8. Stephen says:

    @Matt:

So sales numbers = better quality games???

Well, we think differently my friend.

I rather play a game like LittleBigPlanet over Wii Play any day of the week. I’m pretty sure most gamers will agree with me on that one…

  9. contra_bullet says:

Nice list. You should really do it over now.

There are more Wii fits than PS3s being sold.

The HD gamer fail to see two casual games and two hardcore games are doing very well. They continue meaning they are not hype based. Who is really going to play GTA 4 NOW?

1 square enix is back. FF:crystal baerers is coming and it’s FF3 good but an action RPG. Dragon quest X is coming.

2 The wii is about to get it’snext golden eye in conduit or red steel 2.

3 Motion plus will shut up all the people who wanted 1 to 1 control and actualy give people anew reason to get a wii again.

4 sega is helping out big time.

5 we are in a reseecion and people want imagination not realism.

6 Who can really afford an HDtv right now or a PS3 after getting laid off!

7 people buy nintendo console because they want those tired IPs that nintendo has, yet SONY and MS are only selling to those who already like their old games.

8 HD console are the real problem with gaming because it creates fanboys that get online and defend such a boring console that lacks any real imagination, art, or game play and HD graphics and online have become a crutch.

9 SONY stole the last two gen riding on the back of a better music media CDs then riding on the back of a better movie media DVD. Problem is Blu ray are not better unless you have an HDtv some thing like 15% have them LOL smart move SONY. They have nothing else to bring to the industry expect crying fanboys.

10 HD gamers will leave gaming along the same way older gamers stop going to the arcades. The fact that the Wii creates new customers is better than trying to cater to older gamers who do not know what they want. If they did then why are there not more HD games selling like GTA4? Lots of games with prefect 10s yet few people are buying them. That does not add up. The Wii does, it’s a true game console because it is creating new customers rather than milking the ones that are tech freaks or the ones that require gaming to grow up when it was never theres to have to them selves.

  10. contra_bullet says:

I’m betting the same people that loved 80s cartoons would look down on them right now and they also have HD console and can’t play any thing kiddy because they have an ego to keep up.

This reminds me when I was young and grown ups played the snes and nes I though that was weird at first too, hey but they where good and plus every one went to arcades back then.

  11. Aadil says:

I think that nowadays people focus too much on graphics and not on game play, yeah the ps3 has some good games (Metal Gear Solid 4,Midnight Club LA) but none of these are more accessible or fun than Mario Galaxy Or Super Smash Brothers Brawl. And also if the wii was HD then it would definitely be the best console on the market but even without flashy graphics the Wii is still a very good games console.

Another point I would like to make is that now the Xbox 360 Arcade is actually much cheaper than the wii and now the wii can also run and backup virtual console games onto an SD card.

  12. else3573 says:

lol @ Fraught defending PS3 Fanboys “7. Heh, you say PS3 fanboys are worse than Wii fanboys, whilst only talking about one guy that made a site as a joke.”

Then going on a long ass tirade using profanity. wow, you proved his point WELL.

(and I don’t play games, I’m an outside observer that just saw how angry you got over his preference)

  13. else3573 says:

Stephen said: “I’d rather play a game like LittleBigPlanet over Wii Play any day of the week.I’m pretty sure most gamers will agree with me on that one”

Actually, I think that was Matts point about posting the sales. Wii Play is the number 1 selling game, so how could you possibly assume more people would play Littlebigplanet? Sales don’t equal good, but this isn’t music, where little 14 year old girl teeny boppers are pushing up sales of boy bands. People buy games on reviews, word of mouth, etc., and right now, Matt’s right, more people prefer Wii games, as the sales show.

  14. Avi says:

PS3 is good but the wii does indeed have better games. I really like the 360 song because it is true.

  15. Avi says:

I do NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT recommend Wii play.

  16. Avi says:

I’m pretty sure most gamers would agre that Little big Planet was WAAAAAAAYYYYY better than Wii Play.

  17. gidi says:

I would (like most gamers) give enyone my wii and PS3 for a XBOX 360 1. beter grafiks 2. more games 3. beter games 4. XBOX live.

  18. gidi says:

    P.S. ofer not valid

  19. Avi says:

I agree, that the 360 has better graphics. I disagree, that it has better games. it has HORRIBLE GAMES.

  20. gidi says:

hem hem GTO4 medel of oner paretroopers NHL 09 Maden 09

  21. Avi says:

I have never played a single one of those… never heard of a single one, actually. anyways, wii has waaaaaay more good games I can name and PS3 while not the best console ever I still hold to it having better games than 360.

  22. gidi says:

So do ricerch you are the smartest kid in the family

  23. Avi says:

I’m not at a friends house, so I had to find the flash versions.. I could not find anything about GTO4. I played Paratrooper and did not enjoy it. i didn’t research medal of honor. Sports Games? ew.

  24. Avi says:

    oh, and it’s ”research.”

  25. Avi says:

to be honest if i did bu a 360 the only games I would buy would be Dead Rising and Ninja Gaiden.

  26. Avi says:

    ”if i did BUY a 360.”

  27. Avi says:

    this wii *blank* crap sucks.

  28. Avi says:

I’ll take requests for games as long as they are from a genre I can tolerate. medal of honor is an FPS, which is not a genre i can tolerate.

  29. Avi says:

so I still hold to wii and PS3 having better games than the 360.

  30. Avi says:

they called it the wii, because it is supposed to bring people together.

  31. Avi says:

has anyone seen the list of people who got the RROD? it’s awfully long.

  32. Avi says:

has anyone seen the list of people whose 360s still work? awfully short list.

  33. Avi says:

ANYWAYS, I can name more good games on wii and ps3 than 360, even without going to the games that are popular that i don’t like but most people do. also apologize for the ”sports games? ew” comment, gues i should have specfied, John Madden, anyways, on the wii:Megaman, Soul Calibur, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, SSB, Sonic, Pikmin, Okami, Zack & Wiki, No More Heroes, Punch-out, Animal Crossing, Resident Evil, Mario Strikers, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Monkey Ball, Madworld, Strong Bad, Kirby, Guitar Hero, Pokemon ya ya i know some of these are overrated but they are still good games.

  34. Avi says:

on the PS3:Little Big planet, MGS4, God of War 3, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Kingdom Hearts, it is not that much, but add to that the fact that most of the 360 games I actually like I can play on it without the RROD and with free online, and the fact that I know there’s more I’m forgetting…

  35. Avi says:

I left Resistance off that list on purpose.

  36. Avi says:

    gta as well.

  37. Avi says:

one opinion most gamers will disagree with me on is that most people would order the next-gen consoles like this 360-PS3-Wii. while in graphics, that may be true, but in quality over quantity and gameplay over graphics, I’d go Wii-PS3-360.

  38. gidi says:

    sorry I ment GTA4

  39. Avi says:

well I honestly didn’t like that game.

  40. YourAWiitard says:

WOW. Did your mommy buy you a wii cause your to cheap to buy a superior product, you must have high to buy a wii.

  41. Avi says:

WIIS ARE AWESOME! anyways, we buy the nintendo consoles first cause we know the nintendo consoles are better than the sony and microsoft consoles! whatever wii is really underrated I named plenty good games on it!

  42. Avi says:

the medal of honor games are all FPS’s, arent they?

  43. BouncyTH says:

Hmm something about Wii vs PS3… Something is missing.. I believe it starts with a X and it ends with a degrees.. I can’t put my finger on it.

  44. Avi says:

    Xbox 360?

  45. Avi says:

you could argue that sonic and the secret rings wasn’t good but the rest I stand by.

  46. Avi says:

oh ya you could also argue that RE4 wasn’t good.

  47. Avi says:

mario is a re-hash? it is kinda funny some people believe rehash is different game with same story rather than different story with same game.

  48. Avi says:

online for mario kart, brawl, and downloadables is pretty good…

  49. Uhhhhhhhhh, pie says:

I have argued with a friend during an entire VBS session about this topic. I defended the Wii. I used the reasons that Old-Wiz is using. Go Old-Wizard!!!!!

  50. Delta says:

Didn’t RESIDENT EVIL 4 score pretty well? Of course it was a port to the Revolution(I despise the name “Wii” and almost never use it) and had no enhanced graphics or new content that wasn’t already on the PS2 version, and all it really had to show for it was new controls. But I recall the core of the game still holding-up well enough that some gimicky controls being the only change and lacking new content didn’t damn it to be crucified.
