I think Alberto’s spot-on, actually. In fact, I would take it further in that Superman’s advantage in intelligence and fighting skill (please don’t construe long-winded bluster and bravado and dramatic & hi-impact gestures as skill) wasn’t emphasized ENOUGH and would play a bigger role than most realize. Also, there’s a major intangible that has heretofore gone unnoticed or unappreciated, at least as long as I’ve been reading/commenting here. That being the fact that in the overwhelming number of cases involving one comic hero/villain against another, the win usually goes to whichever character is more established, is the more loved(or feared), has the more devoted following(or bigger prie on his head), has the greater public following (or fear & hatred), inspires the most belief in him and the values he stands for…I can go on, but you get the idea. You guys who are stuck on some misguided “bean counting” mentality where you’re tallying up how “big” THIS feat is as compared to THAT one and trying to break this thing down to some kind of “science” need to remember it’s NOT a science. Public belief and passion for/against a hero/villain historically carries a WHOLE lot of weight in the comics and you all know it. I’ll leave it to everyone to decide for themselves (my personal opinions and bias not being relevant here) which two heroes on the top four listed above (aheam…) are head & shoulders above ALL the rest.
On top of the other factors upon which Alberto elaborated.
Thor can absorb and manipulate galaxy busting energy levels (without any Odinforce) …remember Thor still has a little left, which may be used as an EXTREMELY powerful plot device. Think of a nuclear version of the godblast (which defeated Galactus). Thor wields magic that has been compared to Dr. Strange’s powers. (according to Strange himself). He is a planet buster in strength (at minimum). Superman has had trouble in hand to hand combat with Metallo, and even Lex Luthor in a robotic suit beat him, and then let him live because he needed superman as an opponent. Neither of those two charatcers are a MILLIONTH as strong as Thor. I’ve seen powerless Batman take down Superman (at full power) with a Judo toss. To say Thor CAN’T BEAT SUPERMAN is just plain stupid. Would he win every fight. No. He would win some. Plain and simple.
ANTI-MATTER PARTICLES: Thor’s hammer can manufacture Anti-Matter particles. These particles can erase anyone, or anything from existence. -See Avengers-#8 (vol.1).
Actually, yes. Batman IS smarter and more skillful than Superman; it was precisely those advantages that allowed him to not only survive, but come out on top (the kryptonite brass knuckles didn’t hurt his chances either, I imagine:) ). Obviously in an ideal world, the two friends would never have battled, but Batman being the peerless mind he is, would keep an “ace in the hole” should Superman ever lose his marbles, be under the sway of some magical/psionic manipulation, etc.
My point is, given Thor’s energy powers, and magical abilities, he can do whatever the writer wants. To say he has no chance against Superman, when the Prankster has defeated him, is just plain retarded.
Also, Alberto, Steve’s point is you make such a huge deal about Superman’s supposed strength advantage over Thor, when people who are not nearly as strong as Thor have knocked Superman on his ass, or plain KO’ed him. So strength is no issue. What it comes down to is energy manipulation and magic. And Thor wins by a LANDSLIDE there.
@ Emerald Magus
Don’t be too sure. We’ve all seen stranger things happen. If they needed it to happen for a subplot or twist of some kind to “work”, they’d find a way. Been proven time and time and time again in comics history. Granted, it was a fan-decreed outcome, but Spidey “beat” Superboy. Not closing my mind to ANY possibility when it comes to this stuff.
Hasn’t Thor already beaten a MUCH MUCH more powerful version of Superman (i.e. Gladiator) like 3 or 4 times? And then Hyperion a couple of times also? Those guys don’t even have weaknesses to magic. How is this even a debate?
Actually, a better question would be, why is it Thor’s writers hand-pick blatant Superman clones/surrogates for Thor to fight? Why do they need or desire so much to be seen as able to rumble with Superman? The 800-lb gorilla in the monkey house is ALWAYS the target for the lesser primates flung feces. “MUCH MUCH…” is your own interpretation, needless to say not shared by most here.
Well, let’s see. Gladiator can fly 100x the speed of light. He can punch right through planets. He survived a supernova. He’s not weak to magic either. So yes, he is more powerful than Superman. Clearly.
Here’s Thor’s most impressive feat ever, if you ask me:
Thor once created an indestructible Mystical Vortex that CONTAINED the explosion of a Life-Bomb that would have destroyed a Fifth of the Marvel Universe-AVENGERS-ANNUAL-#16. Thor did managed to save literally millions of Galaxies, as a result.
This is so far beyond any of Superman’s abilities its ridiculous.
Superman can SMOKE gladiator in flight speed, Superman can HIT him with that planet, nevermind punch “through” it, and as far as a supernova, Superman DERIVES his power from the sun…wanna feed him an overloead of what fuelled him to bgin with?
“Alberto…you post and re-post things all the time. In fact you haven’t presented me with any new arguments in months, which is why I’ve been gone”
And yet you keep dodging the questions since the begining. You have not answer anything so far.
“And no they are not equal. Superman cannot absob galaxy busting energy. So Thor is greater”
Which I could concede that Mjolnir could absorb more energy than Superman, Unless I bring up the example in which Superman absorbed the energy of one million stars, which apparently, You don’t know.
“And yet you keep dodging the questions since the begining. You have not answer anything so far.”
Have you responded to every post I’ve made? Show me feat by feat how Superman can deal with the varied attacks Thor has. Especially:
Thor once created an indestructible Mystical Vortex that CONTAINED the explosion of a Life-Bomb that would have destroyed a Fifth of the Marvel Universe-AVENGERS-ANNUAL-#16. Thor did managed to save literally millions of Galaxies, as a result.
ANTI-MATTER PARTICLES: Thor’s hammer can manufacture Anti-Matter particles. These particles can erase anyone, or anything from existence. -See Avengers-#8 (vol.1).
Seriously, “if” he were able to put Superman in such a vortex is trivializing an enormous task. It would be sort of like when he opens a dimensional gate to send enemies he can’t seem to actually fight (Absorbing Man, and I imagine others) to a poisonous atmosphere or whatever, Thor needs to immobilize them in some way, grapple them, or otherwise hold them stationary for however long it took him to cast wheatever spell, summon up hatever spirit, etc. Good luck pulling THAT off. He’s not smart enough to trick Superman into a precarious position, not strong enough to hold him there, not fast enough to catch him…barring some “need” for that to happen in the story, just not gonna happen.
These grand and glorious tricks attributed to Thor are so rarely pulled off in the comics (I’ve beaten this drum way too many times so this will be the last) that they can’t be rationally depended upon against someone with the advantages Superman has. CAN Thor beat him? It’ at least POSSIBLE, and I elaborated a bit on that earlier today (not gonna cut and paste and block up still more space). Reliably, or consistently? Forget it. And, as easily as some Tho flag-wavers make it sound? You GOTTA be kidding. Give at least a thought to my input a short while ago about the intangibles that play into comic battles. I stand by that.
I’m not knocking you at all. Your posts have been well thought out and intelligent. And I agree, Thor does RARELY use each one of these abilities. BUT, that’s because he usually has so many options. Think about it this way. How often does he use a single specific rare ability? Maybe 1 or 2 times that we ever see. But how many times does he use one of these one time abilities? HUNDREDS of times. Not sure if that makes sense or not. So yeah, he rarely uses time travel (in fact only once in his entire history as far as I know). He rarely uses godblast. He rarely uses anti-particles. He rarely uses magical vortexes. But count them all together and he uses these “one time abilities” ALL THE TIME.
President Steve : We’re talking about a fight, not saving people. Did you know that Superman saved by himself the freaking Omniverse? Yes, just by using his speed, he managed to phase the Omniverse. Tell me one thing, what the hell is Thor supposed to do when Superman use his speed to phase when Thor is trying to hit him? Swing Mjolnir? Superman will see it coming.
@President Steve
Thanks for the kind words first of all; though we obviously hold differing opinions about the outcome of Thor vs. Superman, I apprciate the civility at the very least. I DID concede the chance, however unlikely, that Thor can win. If Captain America can defeat Thor, and Batman can defeat Superman, truly ANYTHING is possible.
Again, Thor can teleport. That is faster than any super speed. Gladiator speed blitzed Thor many times. Gladiator arguably can move 100x C. Thor has reacted to many speedsters. Again, he can suck Superman’s soul out. Doesn’t matter how fast he is going.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking. How often does Thor soul suck? Well, my response is how often does Superman speed blitz? More often? Sure. How often does his entire fight consist of him speed blitzing someone non-stop? Almost never.
Funny that Emerald is still dodging the same stuff I posted a month ago. Right after I posted that, he left for a while.
You put GL first. SBP KILLED 32 Green Lanterns and PWNED Sodam Yat + Ion. Kal-El survived against him and managed to stop his rampage after Kal-L’s death. How good were the Green Lanterns in this? Lol? Good at being used as baits?
No problem. Some people on this site get really rude with other people on this thread. I’m not one of them, unless someone gets rude with me first. I don’t remember Cap defeating Thor. Not saying you’re wrong, or lying, but I’d like to know exactly when and where that happened.
President Steve : Can Thor suck Superman’s soul? That’s a theory. The BEST telepaths can’t even ENTER Superman’s mind. You should stop with your theories and find something that might actually work for real.
“The funny thing is that people think Superman’s heat vision can’t be usefull against Thor.”
I’ve already showed that Thor can absorb an entire galaxy – busting energy attack. He can also contain a blast that can destroy 1/5 of the universe. What are eye-beams to that?
First of all, everything here is a theory. What do you think this is? Second, telepathy has nothing to do with a soul suck. Its mystical. Last I checked, Superman is highly vulnerable to mystical attacks.
I’m going to answer and I expect for you to answer
“Thor once created an indestructible Mystical Vortex that CONTAINED the explosion of a Life-Bomb that would have destroyed a Fifth of the Marvel Universe-AVENGERS-ANNUAL-#16. Thor did managed to save literally millions of Galaxies, as a result”
You are taking this really out of proportion 1/5 of the universe destroyed by CHAIN REACTION
“A chain reaction is a sequence of reactions where a reactive product or by-product causes additional reactions to take place. In a chain reaction, positive feedback leads to a self-amplifying chain of events”
As Grand Master explained
“This life bombs will cause a chain reaction which will lead to a big bang”

Thor contained the FIRST explosion which if not being contained it will have caused a CHAIN REACTION that will have ended in the destruction of 1/5 of the universe.

also, superman’s eye beams, someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i read they are only as hot as the core of the sun. Thor once had a casual chat with Atum in the core of the sun.
sure, post a scan. i’ve never read it personally, i was taking someone else’s word. even if you’re right, he still contained a galaxy. 200 billion stars to 1 million for superman.
From my understanding, the life-bombs create the big bang AFTER they destroy the universe, so the bomb itself would still destroy a 5th of the universe, but when I see the scan I’ll be able to tell better.
Emerald : Your the fanboy. Putting GL first? HAHAHA. Don’t make me laugh freaking retard. SBP DIDN’T KILL KAL-EL. HE DID SURVIVE AND STOP HIM. THE GLS GOT RAPPED. Deal with it dickhead.

And no they are not equal. Superman cannot absob galaxy busting energy. So Thor is greater.
“Are you going to tell me that the energy of one thousand suns is more that ripping the fabric of reality or cauterizing a cosmic rip?”
Actually yes. I am a PhD physics student. So I think I can say much better than you. 1 solar mass can rip the fabric of reality.
Also, Thor regularly tears reality. What do you think his hammer does when it makes a wormhole. People on here are getting really fanboyish.
Tell me how Superman counters this:
ANTI-MATTER PARTICLES: Thor’s hammer can manufacture Anti-Matter particles. These particles can erase anyone, or anything from existence. -See Avengers-#8 (vol.1).
Actually, yes. Batman IS smarter and more skillful than Superman; it was precisely those advantages that allowed him to not only survive, but come out on top (the kryptonite brass knuckles didn’t hurt his chances either, I imagine:) ). Don’t listen to him, Steve. I haven’t seen a lot of this before. Interesting stuff indeed.
This part was cool:
“Thor-#425 where a blast by Thor’s hammer ripped wide the fabric of the Universe itself and sent Surtur and Yimir to the Death Dimension.”
You actually are making me re-consider moving Thor up to 2 on my list and moving Surfer down to 3.
Here’s my top 10 powerful Superheroes:
1. GL (Obviously)
2. Surfer
3. Thor
4. Sentry
5. Superman
6. Martian Manhunter
7. Wonder Woman
8. Captain Marvel
9. The Flash
10. Dr. Fate
The anti-gravity was cool. That incapicitated the Super Skrull? Damn, I’d love to see a scan of that.
Public belief and passion for/against a hero/villain historically carries a WHOLE lot of weight in the comics and you all know it.
Um….no. Spiderman is not beating the Sentry.
Steve: Not all the Superman fans are close-minded here. I’ve said many times, Superman only wins 6/10. I think Thor can easily take 4.
@ Emerald Magus

IF he put such a vortex around Superman there’s nothing superman could do. Nothing.
If.

There are 200-400 BILLION stars in a galaxy, Alberto.
1,000,000 = 1 million
200,000,000,000 = 200 billion
“And yet you keep dodging the questions since the begining. You have not answer anything so far.”

Very arguably, because Reality is pretty though.
So though that not even the big bang tear it.
“In fact, the full power of the hammer can radiate with the energy of a THOUSAND SUNS”
Ok before I get into this lets SEE WHAT THOR ACTUALLY SAID
“NOW LET MY HAMMER BURN WITH THE MIGHT OF A 1000 SUNS”
I wolud really love to see him trying that on Superman
Ok so the hammer is burning as hot as 1000 suns, mmmm it does not look that hot anymore.
The burning of 1000 suns does not TEAR REALITY. as We know the Universe has more than 1000 suns.
Can the heat of 1000 suns tear reality?
I don’t think so
@PeterJRaia:
