Can't say we didn't dig this documentary about the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, two very interesting and original rival bands who loved to hate each other almost as much as they hated to love each other.
Rumoured to have shot over 1500 hours of footage in a seven year span, this documentary really digs deep into the rockin', drugged out, emotional, manic, and sometimes psychotic realm of two bands struggling to remain true to thine own sound while at the same time trying to make it big in a conformist driven record industry that more often prefers the easy “pre-packaged” TV dinner over the more palatable complicated dish that makes you earn it’s flavour.
The documentary starts off optimistic and light, showing the instant initial camaraderie between the two bands and their lead singers Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Courtney Taylor (Dandy Warhols). At first, this camaraderie is quite enthusiastic and intense, based on a mutual respect of the others music and the shared agenda to make original music without selling out to the record labels. It isn’t very long however, before things between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols get hairy. This is mainly due to the fact that the record labels begin to favor the Dandy Warhols, the more docile of the two bands, giving them the one up on the more animated and out of control Brain Jonestown Massacre. This starts a big feud reminiscent of Oasis/Blur, complete with insults, threats and restraining orders. The bands' friendship starts to come apart as quickly as it came together. Anton Newcombe decides he no longer respects once good friend Courtney Taylor and decides he'll have nothing more to do with him again, not even if he was the last dandy on earth! The Dandy Warhols, fed up with the all the antics of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, decide to issue a restraining order against the band, but admit that doesn't mean they won't still buy Brian Jonestown music... classic love hate..
If you enjoy rock documentaries that really dig deep into the lives and trials of interesting rock bands then we think you’ll dig DIG.. So, if you’re able to dig it up, then it’s highly recommended that you check it out. Dig?
